That's racist!

Back at LSU, I had a professor named Dr. Sells. She one day asked us to be consciouus of whether or not we crossed the street when we saw a black person or scooted over in the elevator. This behavior, she told us, was racist.
That is when I had enough. It's not racism. It's survival instincts. Out of the 7 or so best friends I have in life, several of us have been victimized by black criminals.
- In 2006, I was followed home from the ATM by two black males. As they were attempting to enter the home, my friend drove up the driveway and spooked them off.
- A friend had her car stolen by a black man outside the Spanish Moon in Baton Rouge.
- In Houston, I had a friend who was the victim of an attempted armed robbery by 3 black males.
- My cousin was jumped by a gang of black males in New Orleans, and nearly lost an eye.
- My friend was jumped, beaten, and robbed by a group of black males in Brooklyn. When an elderly black man came outside to stop the attack, the yound black males started beating him.
- Another friend was assaulted in Chicago by a black man who slapped him and taunted him for being gay. He has also had his phone snatched out of his hand several times by black males who run by as he is talking on it.
Almost every single one of us has been a victim of black criminals at one point or another, yet we are "racist" when we go out of our way to avoid people who look like these perpetrators. I would say we're obeying an evolutionary imperative to act according to our experiences. I'm not exactly dashing across 4 lanes of traffic to get away from Clarence Thomas. My friend from Brooklyn doesn't develop a cold sweat every time a kindly, older black man walks behind him.
The young black males of Chicago are now giving us even more reasons to  be "racist." In the city where law-abiding citizens are forbidden from owning guns for self-defense, mobs of black youth are running into stores and doing, well, whatever the fuck they want.  This has been going on for a while, especially in Philadelphia, but now the attacks have hit that Midwestern mecca of high-end shopping- the Magnificent Mile. Of course, the mainstream media not only refused to identify the race of the mob members, but CBS actually actively attempted to deceive by placing a picture of white holiday shopping crowds at the top of the story. Aww, political correctness...

I love how the NYT article notes that some of the youth arrested weren't able to call their parents for 6 hours. Boo frickin hoo. Most are probably already parents themselves, and guess who's paying for it?

South Carolina flips D.C. The Gamecock

Many people are upset about the federal regulations that come into force next year to ban the conventional light bulbs we all know and love.  In the name of efficiency and the environment, the government has mandated that the American public use mercury-filled, collagen-burning bulbs to light their homes.  Lawmakers in South Carolina, apparently fed up after acquiring Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from repeatedly flushing their low flows, have decided to act.  The state legislator is looking to pass a bill that would allow for the intrastate production and distribution of the until now doomed incandescents.
I applaud these efforts and think voters who enjoy being free to pick out their own home furnishings should encourage their state legislators to do the same.  Of course, here in California, we are banning the incandescents faster than the Federal Government.

Obama flies in personal trainer from Chicago--every week!

I have got to break into the community organizing racket. Somehow between that job, a short stint as a law professor, and one term as a U.S. Senator, Barack Obama gathered enough scrilla to fly in a personal trainer from Chicago to D.C. every week. Meanwhile couples who make $250,000 a year are being told to stop being greedy, accept the fact that they're rich, and hand over their money to the government--or else. As the article points out, carbon emissions from theses weekly excursions are quite substantial, but I won't get into that. On this blog, we just take it as a given that high-profile global warming advocates are disingenuous green-energy investors.

Namir Anthony Jones: future murderer

Last September, two San Diego women were terrified as they resisted the attack of Namir Anthony Jones, 22. Jones' rampage started at a hospital parking lot in the Hillcrest neighborhood. He attacked a woman at knife-point as she was exiting her vehicle. The woman narrowly escaped the attack by throwing her hot coffee in Jones' face.
Two hours later, Jones was at it again. His second attack occurred near the University of San Diego. He told a female jogger that he needed help, then grabbed her headphones, and attempted to subdue her by grabbing her arms. The woman ran and was picked up by a passing motorist.
Finally, the law caught up with Jones, and he was arrested. What sentence awaited this defendant who, in addition to the two attacks, was also found guilty of trying to steal a car in August? Wait for it folks-- ONE year in prison, and 3 years probation.
This sentence is outrageous. Every time a young woman in Southern California is murdered by a repeat offender, people get outraged for about a month or two, feel-good, specially-named, "stringent" laws are passed, and people tune into the next hot topic. When people like Jones are given comically short sentences  for such grievous offenses, we spit in the face of his victims.
Imagine the relief his second victim must have felt when she saw a good Samaritan stopping to rescue her. She must have thought to herself, "I'm gonna get him. I'm going to stop him." Well, it would appear the joke is on her. Jones has been given a time out but, apparently, has not fouled out of the game. Meanwhile, it remains virtually impossible for law-abiding citizens to obtain concealed carry permits in the city.  Fear not folks, the judge also ordered that Jones has to attend drug treatment before starting probation.  Gee, wonder who's footing the bill for this act of largess?  Can you imagine the delight of the other people in the treatment program?  Or of the some who are there because they started using after being the victim of a crime?
Who is the genius behind this act of "justice"?  Honestly, it's impossible to know.  Is it Judge Charles G. Rogers?  It seems like it would have been within his discretion to sentence Jones to more time. Was it the prosecutor?  Jones performed multiple criminal acts, but it doesn't seem like he was charged with all of them.  From the story, it appears he was only charged with one count of attempted carjacking but that he had intended to carjack both a Payless Employee in August and the first woman he attacked.
The media?  I can't even find a picture of Namir Anthony Jones online after spending a good bit of time searching.  The people of San Diego? There were no comments on this story on CBS 8. Most of the people I know here don't even keep up with the local news.  I encourage all Southern Californians to overcome this apathy and take a moment to contact the media and demand to know more about this story.  In a year, this man will be walking the streets among your wives, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and friends. Wouldn't you at least like to have access to a picture of the guy?

Make it a decaf for these folks...

Riot in Seattle

In Seattle, John T. Williams was shot by police. The shooting was ruled unjustified, but criminal charges will not be filed. To honor the memory of the shooting victim, and protest the use of force, the protestors acted like children throwing a tantrum---- throwing lit flares at police cars, damaging businesses and the cars of private citizens, trying to break bank windows, holding signs advocating violence.
What is their point? What are they trying to accomplish? Are they, in effect, daring the police to shoot them?
I tell ya what, I would love to see this happen in a more conservative city. Maybe these babies would go back home to their mommas and, let's face it, their unemployment checks if they were faced with a shotgun-toting businessman ready and willing to protect his livelihood with deadly force.

And the world yawned...

Newt Gingrich probably going to announce presidential run

Another old fart upset about the prospect of "gays" having equal rights is thinking about running for the Republican presidential nomination. My hope is that Newt, Sarah, and Mitt all run----and cancel out each others' votes. This may be the best shot for a liberty-minded candidate like Gary Johnson or Ron Paul to make it through the nomination process.

Why haven't we heard more about this?

Former NOAA official: Obama could have prevented Gulf disaster with controlled burn.

As someone who was born, raised, and lived in Louisiana for 22 years, I am outraged over how this spill was handled. I read this Gouget article when it first came out in May of 2010, then watched it go unmentioned by the press. In my Environmental Law class, I was disappointed but unsurprised to learn that none of the ultra-opinionated young men and women of the class had even heard this story. One particularly unkempt young man even accused me of making the story up. My speculation about why this story didn't make news is that BP agreed to take the fall in the media in exchange for being protected from bankruptcy by the damages agreements. Fishy, fishy stuff...

Tea party violence??? We haven't seen any videos like this.....

Union goon roughs up tea party member in Atlanta.

I have a lot of liberal friends who like to talk in generalities. It seems to be a common characteristic throughout the species. Next time your favorite liberal accuses the tea party of generalized violence, send them this clip, then ask them to send you a similar one back that shows tea partiers behaving in a like fashion.

Welcome

I have set this blog up with the intention of being able to stimulate discussion with liberty-minded individuals. In the upcoming months, I plan to post "book reports" on some libertarian classics, as well as libertarian movie reviews, and commentary on contemporary political/economic issues.
